What is Voice of IP?

Voice of IP an outgrowth of my Clause 8 podcast and is the definitive guide about what’s important in the world of intellectual property (IP), with a particular focus on patent-related developments.

Clause 8 is listened to by sophisticated corporate in-house counsel, judges from around the world, top IP policymakers, and top patent dealmakers and attorneys to stay ahead of the curve by understanding the personalities and forces shaping IP.

Clause 8 features conversations that provide strategic insights about how to best deal with various patent-related issues and shape the future of IP. Some previous guests include America’s great innovators, federal judges, USPTO Directors, and Carole Baskin’s attorney from the documentary Tiger King.

The goal of this newsletter is to do what I do with Clause 8 more frequently (but not too frequently!) and reach those that aren’t necessarily interested in regularly listening to podcasts about IP (yes, I know it’s hard to believe but there are people like that out there ;)).

Why did you start the Clause 8 podcast?

I have always been a big fan of great long form interviews.

So, I started Clause 8 to share conversations with the most interesting people in the IP field. My main goal was to entertain while providing actionable insights about how to succeed.

Also, I felt that too much of the public conversation about patents was driven by those who didn’t know much about patents but knew that patents are “bad.”  I hoped to play a small part in counteracting that narrative. I picked the title Clause 8 specifically as a reminder that IP rights were mentioned in the Constitution because the founders understood the importance of encouraging innovation.  In other words, that patents aren’t the recent invention of “patent trolls” as a get-rich-quick-scheme.
